The early modern history of the Ukrainian lands provides a relatively rare European example of how confessional affiliation assumed functions that in other regions were performed by dynastic loyalty, estate-based patriotism, or territorial rights. From the Union of Brest of 1596 to the secularization measures of the late eighteenth century, Orthodoxy functioned not merely as a system of doctrine and ritual practice but, above all, as a vocabulary through which the Ruthenian community of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth, and later the population of the Hetmanate, described itself, its privileges, and the boundaries of its community. These theses outline four key stages of this process and formulate a qualification concerning the analytical limits of the confessionalization model when applied to the Eastern European context. The empirical basis consists of polemical treatises from the late sixteenth and first third of the seventeenth centuries, articles of Cossack-Polish agreements, documents of Orthodox brotherhood centers, and legislative acts of the Russian Empire concerning the administration of the Kyiv Church. The analytical approach is based on treating confessional affiliation not as a fixed characteristic of the population but as a variable social function whose meaning was determined by the configuration of political institutions surrounding it.
